Concord Coachmen
Saturday, September 25th
At 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 25, the Concord Coachmen Barbershop Chorus will present a program of 40 minutes in length on South Main Street in Concord.
The Barbershop Harmony Society was born in 1938. In an effort to stem the decline of the barbershop quartet, O.C. Cash and Rupert Hall established the
“Society for the Preservation and Propagation of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America.” Today there are over 670 chapters in the United States and Canada.
Barbershop singing, like jazz and the spiritual, is truly American-style music.
It is a chromatic four-part harmony sung by four unaccompanied voices. In barbershop harmony, the melody is sung by the lead, while the tenor part is sung above the lead. The bass sings lower than the lead and the baritone provides the in-between notes that complete the chords that give barbershop harmony its distinctive four-part sound.
Since 1957, the Coachmen have been delighting audiences in the greater Concord area by singing our four-part harmony in the a cappella style. Our repertoire includes popular songs from many genres. Our members fully embrace and understand the mysterious alchemy of singing together and want to share our hobby.
