What is next for the future of travel?
According to The World Trade and Tourism Council, the travel and tourism sector globally, travel and tourism is one of the world’s largest economic sectors, supporting 1 in 10 jobs, (330 million) worldwide and generating 10.3% of global GDP. But, this information was before the 2020 crisis. Certainly one can concede that the impact of the situation on this industry is significant, if not momentous. The current stop in travel is on an incomparable scale.
Realities of recovery and the new normal for travel are a combination of work in process policies and a crystal ball. All of the components of the travel industry; hotels, resorts, airlines and cruises; will be establishing new standards for health and safety to be acceptable to both government agencies and consumers. Technology will be embraced to allow for contactless transactions at airports and hotels, keyless entry into rooms, and online menus in restaurants. Health screenings may come into play, in addition to stringent disinfection protocols, with increased frequency and effectiveness.
Of paramount importance to the industry, is ensuring travelers’ confidence, safety and health.
The Airbnb experience may not be so enticing in the short term.
Juliet Kinsman, Condé Nast Traveler writer wisely shares, “As we emerge from this torpor, we’ll be craving health-enhancing experiences, restorative immersions in nature, spirit-lifting adventures in the open air and safe escapes for quality time with our nearest and dearest.”
U.S.-based travel may be the first to come back for Americans, as border openings in countries around the world are in a state of suspension. This summer and fall, destinations that can be driven to, with more remote settings and less crowd contact may be desired. There are many wonders to enjoy in New England not far from Concord, wild horses on the beaches of the Outer Banks, and vineyards and wineries in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York.
Europe and beyond…
As dreams of international travel come back into consciousness, there will be the desire to transition to venturing back into the wider world with measured bearings. Looking ahead to 2021 and beyond, river cruising on small ships, private villas, high-quality resorts with reputations for service or exclusive remote accommodations may be preferred over cruise ships or locations with tightly packed crowds. However, those who love to cruise on the ocean will continue to be drawn to that all-inclusive option and there will be many values once that segment of travel reopens.
The Great Realization- Hindsight is 2020
The guidance of a professional travel advisor will be more valued than ever.
Since COVID 19, those who had booked vacations with an online travel agent (OTA) found themselves on hold for hours, without resolution to cancellations and refunds. Some call centers for online travel agencies and metasearch engines, (think of a company that rhymes with hexpedia) were shut down with no recourse or regard for customer service.
In contrast, the role of a professional travel agent is to advise, plan, execute and deliver excellence at every step of the vacation experience. The relationship with the travel agent is one of communication and accountability, to provide customized personal experiences, so that vacations are memorable and meet and exceed expectations. Typically, travel advisors do not charge for their services, as the vendors pay them. Online travel agencies have those costs built into their fees. Oftentimes, a local travel professional can access unpublished values, as well as unique immersion experiences with locals on every continent, as well as priceless guidance to enhance the vacation with meaningful insight to the location. Travel insurance policies, which quality travel agents are highly trained in and strongly recommend, will be critical to important peace of mind and travel protection.
Travel gives us the power to behold and reckon, exceptional people, meaningful traditions, nature’s quiet beauty and grand force, historical eras, art and music to lift the soul, culinary delights and unique perspectives on life. As the world recalibrates to the new norm in 2020 and beyond, believe in Condé Nast Traveler’scentral proposition: Travel is a force for good on planet Earth, both for the travelers and for those whose lives are touched by travel.
