Every Great City needs a Great Bookstore, like Gibson's
Some would say that no community is complete without a bookstore that is independent and locally owned. Gibson’s Bookstore in Concord, NH, has been a part of the community since 1898, and is the oldest continuously operating retailer in the Concord-area. Since its founding, Gibson’s has enhanced the community - with great books and events. In fact, in 2013 Gibson’s moved up South Main Street to a much expanded home, offering a café, toys, huge children’s book section, and many more racks of classics and new books. They gave South Main Street a homegrown café, and bought local independent toy store Imagination Village to integrate the best in educational toys and games with our extensive collection of children’s books.
Owner Michael Herrmann bought Gibson’s back in 1994. In 2014, Gibson’s was awarded the coveted Independent Spirit Award, given each year by the Book Publisher’s Reps of New England to a bookstore that best exemplifies the spirit of the independent bookstore.
Today, it is a community place to meet, share a cup of tea, or catch a reading. And if you are looking for a classic, a cult favorite, or a book for the park, Gibson’s never fails to satisfy. If they don’t have it, they can quickly order it from a supplier. And, Gibson’s offers a full schedule of author events, hosting more than 100 events each year, in person (or with the times, on-line), featuring big names such as like Erik Larson, Jodi Picoult, and Jonathan Franzen, and local talents like Donald Hall, Sy Montgomery, and David Elliott. Gibson’s gives back too, working with schools, non-profits, and other organizations over the years, to help serve their mission with book sales and support.
With all that, it is no surprise that today Gibson’s is the largest independent bookstore in Northern New England.
